Vinny The Guy - Canadian Artist from Vancouver, BC

A word from Vinny himself:

I'm a self-taught artist working primarily with ink, paint, and whatever surfaces call to me — from paper and canvas to skateboards. My style floats between figurative and abstract, often landing somewhere in the expressive, surreal, or even cubist realms. I lean into spontaneity, letting the line lead the way with no set destination — a process some might call automatic drawing, but for me, it’s simply following instinct.

With no formal training, I proudly consider myself an outsider artist. My influences range from the bold simplicity of Thierry Noir to the playful complexity of Paul Klee, Picasso, and Jean Dubuffet. I’m fascinated by the idea of creating something out of nothing — using color and form to spark joy, surprise, and maybe even a smile.

I've taken part in a few local art shows and look forward to sharing my work with wider audiences. At the heart of it all, I’m just a down-to-earth guy who loves to create, experiment, and turn the blank into the unexpected.

How I Met Vinny The Guy

Vinny reached out to me after he found my website artondeck.com, asking if I would be interested in a collaborative skateboard art project. I was super stoked that he had found my site, and wanted to do something related to art and skateboarding.  I quickly checked out his art online on Instagram @vinnytheguyofficial and instantly wanted to work with him. His art depicted some super interesting imagery with multiple layers of depth to it. I have always appreciated art that requires multiple looks and the ability to uncover different perspectives and subtleties that change every time you look at it.

So for sure I wanted to help show Vinny's art in some capacity, and help get his work out there.  I offered to ship him a blank skateboard and asked him to do whatever came to mind as a design, then to ship it back to me so I could showcase it at some local festivals in Toronto. I offered to put it up for sale, and if it did not sell right away, to post it on my website until it did.  Having no interest whatsoever in making any profit from a talented and deserving artist, my only goal was to recoup my costs for the materials and shipping, and help sell the piece with all of the profits going right back to Vinny.

Unfortunately it wasn't ready in time for the Jackalope Festival in 2025, but I was able to show it off at the Big on Bloor Street Festival in Toronto in July. I must hand it to Vinny, it turned out amazing and looked super cool on display:

In Vinny's Own Words:

Here's what he had to say about this one-of-a-kind piece - on an 8.0" x 32.0" standard sized skateboard deck:

"This design, as most of my other pieces, came straight from my imagination. This one in particular was created while catching a train home one day. I wanted to incorporate some basic shapes, fun patterns and vibrant colors, while adding a few eyeballs and human-like features into the mix as well. I think a good skateboard graphic should catch the viewer's eye, and I hope this does just that. "
