Deck Width Guide

Finding Your Width

Deck width shapes how a board feels underfoot — how quickly it snaps, how stable it rides, and how it responds to your style. There is no universal rule, but a few practical benchmarks can point you in the right direction.

Quick-Reference Comparison

Width Shoe Size (approx.) Feel Suits
7.75" US Men's 7–9 Quick, responsive Technical street, flip tricks, smaller riders
8.0" US Men's 8–10 Balanced snap and platform Street skating, park, versatile all-around riding
8.25" US Men's 10–12 Planted, stable Transition, cruising, larger riders, beginners
8.5"+ US Men's 12+ Very stable, slower rotation Bowl, vert, cruising, large feet

Shoe size is a starting point, not a hard rule. Foot width, stance width, and riding preference all factor in.

8.0 vs. 8.25 — The Most Common Question

These two widths are close enough that many skaters ride both comfortably. The difference comes down to feel rather than capability:

  • 8.0" — The board rotates with slightly less resistance, which many street skaters appreciate for flip tricks and quick footwork. It tends to feel more nimble under the foot.
  • 8.25" — The extra quarter-inch adds platform, which translates to more confidence on landings, cruising, and riding transition. Beginners often find the wider deck more forgiving because there is more surface to land on.

If you are genuinely between the two, lean toward your natural shoe size alignment. Riders with US Men's 9–10 often find either width works; personal preference tends to decide it after a few sessions.

By Skating Style

  • Street / technical tricks — 7.75"–8.0" for quick board rotation and precise foot placement.
  • Park / all-around — 8.0"–8.25" covers most terrain without compromising either direction.
  • Transition / bowl — 8.25"–8.5" for the platform and stability needed at speed.
  • Cruising / commuting — 8.25"+ for a planted, comfortable ride.
  • Beginners — 8.0"–8.25" gives enough platform to build confidence without being unwieldy.

A Note on Artist Decks

Art on Deck's artist-made decks are produced in standard skateable shapes and widths — they ride the same as any quality street or all-around deck. The width guidelines above apply equally to our artist collaboration pieces.
